SOLICITORS IN MANCHESTER
Manchester Solicitors - Introduction
It was in 1838 that several Solicitors attended a meeting at Manchester Law Library to establish one of the first Solicitors Law Societies. It was first called the Manchester Law Association and only changed its name to Manchester Law Society around 1910.
Manchester was first commonly used to describe the City in the 17th century. The origins of Manchester date back to the Romans where records show two forts existed in the City. One fort centred around Castlefield and the other fort around the Cathedral.
Manchester had grown and around 1222 there records show an annual fair near to St. Ann's Square.
The first Court of Law in Manchester was well established by 1222. Manchester became an independent entity in 1301 when a Mayor was appointed by the Lord of the Manor to handle the administrative matters for the Borough.
Solicitors in Manchester - The Beginning
It was in 1154 not long after the reign of Henry II that Richard of Anstey commenced litigation proceedings against Mabel de Francheville. The Court case was started in the Kings Royal Court in 1158. The case was transferred to the Court of the Archbishop of Canterbury from where it went to Rome to be heard before Papal Judges. The case was decided in favour of Richard and returned to the Kings Royal Court where judgment was given in Richard's favour.
It was evident in the litigation dispute that Richard paid for specialist advice in the Ecclesiastical Court but not in the Kings Royal Court.
By the thirteenth century there is clear evidence of established professional Lawyers so it was over this period of 150 years or so that the legal landscape changed and evolved.
Litigation cases developed and evolved with the increasing need for the claimant to set out in writing a recognised course of action in the papers and to present the evidence. It is the importance of getting these pleadings right that encouraged Claimants to pay for professional advisers.
Many legal historians have formed the view that by the early twelfth century County Courts were meeting on a monthly basis. They were primarily attended by Landowners and those in public or quasi public office.
