Guide to using a
Solicitor, Lawyer or Conveyancer:
a) Always ask for a quote or an
estimate. This reduces
the likelihood of a dispute. If you receive an estimate
always set an
upper limit for your Solicitor.
b) Clarify your quote / estimate. Does it include vat and disbursements? What steps are included and how many hours are likely to be needed to complete the matter?
c) What steps can you take to reduce the amount of time needed to complete the matter?
d)
Think about
different scenarios. What if the facts or circumstances
change?
e)
Check the
grade of the Solicitor who will be handling your case. You
may be getting
a case worker / file manager when you think you are paying for a
Partner.
Usually the grades will be Partner, Associate,
Assistant,
Trainee, Case worker/file manager.
f)
Check the
firm is able to work to your timescales.
g)
Instructions
to your Solicitor should be clear, concise and given in plenty of time
to
enable work to be scheduled to your timescale.
h)
Keep in
regular contact and at regular intervals to check on progress.
